Counseling and Therapy for Autistic People
I have a special interest in working with kids, teens, and adults who are on the spectrum and who may also have limited speaking or motor ability. I am comfortable working with individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and have experience providing therapy through written or text communication. I am very familiar with a variety of physical and mental disabilities and have over 20 years of volunteer experience as a peer-companion in special education classrooms. I find enjoyment in having conversations with autistic people and often learn a lot from their varied interests and appreciate their unique perspectives.
Goals of therapy for autistic people: Increase assertiveness to help you express yourself more confidently.
Therapy for people with autism is a client centered approach where I work collaboratively with my clients. I practice trauma-informed therapy approaches to provide a safe, non judgmental place where you can express yourself and who you are fully! Therapy for autistic people uses strengths based techniques and collaborative decision making to foster empowerment and build independence.

Many people with autism struggle with anxiety, can have depression, or have issues with poor self-image or low self-worth due to the traumas and hardships associated with nuerodiversity, and some people with autism may have difficulty setting boundaries or reaching their goals. Therapy for autistic people is a non-stigmatizing place where your perspective is valued and validated. When I work with people who have autism my focus is to build self-confidence and self-esteem, foster independence, and support resilience.

Raquel Buchanan is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT #118976) in California. Raquel is a doctoral candidate at Grand Canyon University where her research is on The Lived Experience of Body Issues in Autistic People. She is the older sibling to an adult, non-speaking autistic guy. She recognizes that some people with autism may have co-occurring intellectual impairments and she is comfortable working with people who have these challenges too. In addition, she has experience working with self-injurious behavior in autistic people, sensory processing disorders, specific learning disabilities like dyslexia, and speech or communication delays. Raquel offers therapy for autistic people as her mission is to create an inclusive environment for autistic people so that they can become their own advocate and their voices can be heard.
